Daegu, also known as Taegu, and officially the Daegu Metropolitan City, is the third largest metropolitan area in South Korea. The city is the capital and principal city of the surrounding province, Gyeongsangbuk-do, although it is not legally part of the province. These two areas are often called Daegu-Gyeongbuk.
Dubbing itself "Colourful Daegu", Daegu is situated in the middle of a wide, flat valley. Thus it is quite literally rectangular in shape, with the subway system forming a stretched X over this region. The city plays host to one of South Korea's largest US military bases.
